For the cat/dog co-living, I should add that my appartment has 2 floors, and that my dog don't go up the stair by her own, so the cat had plenty of time to hide and "protect" herself while observing the dog! I think this kind of "you can't catch me here" area is important, even if it doesn't have to be a whole room !
And in general, I've really taught my dog that everything is ok with cats (she can go up to them and say hi, try to play, try to sniff them, etc etc..) but she MUST do it slow and gentle. We made her meet my bff's cat and we let her interact with him, only if she was delicate (she's very curious so she quickly understood what she needed to do if she wanted to investigate the cat). We only called her back when she was being too pushy and the cat was getting overwhelmed. We kept her in leash just for safety until she managed to ignore him (=the cat wasn't 100% of her focus at all time). It might work very differently with other dogs but in any case that's how I did with Sarabi!
