Peak Bloom for the trees started on March 28th this year, but ended early on March 31st due to stormy conditions. This is the second year in a row that I found myself at the Tidal Basin getting to walk under a canopy of Cherry Blossom trees. It was so amazing to get to see the Cherry Blossoms in peak bloom, and I hope to return next year to witness it again. BRIEF HISTORY OF CHERRY BLOSSOMS IN DC: The history of Cherry Blossom trees in DC dates back to the early 20th century. Proposals for Cherry Blossom Trees to be planted in DC were made as far back as 1885, when a Mrs. Eliza Scidmore suggested the idea multiple times to government officials. Tests between 1906 and 1908 by USDA Official Dr. David Fairchild proved that the trees could grow in DC. Seeing the results of these tests, Mrs. Scidmore approached then-First Lady Helen Taft with her proposal, who further endorsed the idea of Cherry Blossom Trees in DC. Soon after, the then-Mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, showed support for the idea, offering to send trees to Washington. The first 2,000 trees arrived in 1910, but unfortunately had to be disposed of when pests detrimental to the tree's health were discovered by USDA inspectors. A second attempt was made in 1912, and to everyone's relief, 3,020 trees made it to DC in good condition. DC held its first "Cherry Blossom Festival" in 1935, and has continued to successfully hold the event nearly every year afterwards. OMG, I did take the Metro to the National Mall, so that could've happened!! I was near the Tidal Basin mostly between 9-10:30am, so anytime within an hour of that range I was probably on a train heading to or away from the Cherry Blossoms. |
